It is summer and thoughts turn to road trippin’. While formulating a big contest for Take Your Dog to Work Day, we decided to Take Our Work to the Zoo. Last Friday we closed the In Clover office and headed South out of Boulder to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. We were met by Dr. Jeff Baier, DVM and whooshed onto a golf cart and up a steep mountain slope to the Zoo’s Veterinary Hospital.

About two-and-a-half years ago I met a dog named Blue. He was wearing an E-collar, was skeletal, covered in ticks and could not have been more excited to make my acquaintance. Blue found me at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. He had been on, what I can only imagine from what I know about him now, a harrowing adventure from the mean streets of Albuquerque to confinement at the Humane Society in Boulder. I had been through a difficult year of grieving for the loss of my dog.
Proven tips to get your cat to eat a new food
A few months ago, a new cat came into our home. He is a two- or three-year-old Bengal named Sadik, and he came to us in a rather convoluted way but has settled right in. We’ve not had a cat in a couple of years, but I had learned along the way that cats really should have wet food, to ensure they remain well-hydrated. Apparently kidney issues are the most common ailment for cats as they age. Sadik’s previous owner had fed him only dry and we were unsure of his diet at his first home.
What to watch for on your pet’s supplement label
70% of drugs commonly prescribed by veterinarians are not approved for use in dogs and cats. Additionally, the animal health supplements you buy over the counter and from your vet are unapproved drugs in the eyes of the regulators. This is true because in 1994 when congress passed DSHEA, the dietary supplement health and education act, they specifically said it did not apply to animals. There is no legal definition for animal health products such as joint supplements, if they are not a complete food, and they are not, they have to be an unapproved drug in the eyes of the regulators. This doesn’t mean that all of these unapproved drugs are bad for your pet or of poor quality, but it does mean that it is your responsibility as consumers to be informed label readers, especially with the supplements you are giving your pet.

Every morning I drag myself out of bed, cold nose nudging me along, for my morning run. My running partner and motivation is Floyd, a rescued Golden Retriever who will reward a good ear rub with a huge grin and loves everything about our early adventure. He is a morning dog and is anxious to get out his ya ya’s before going to work. We usually see 7 or 8 other dogs along the way. Shockingly, statistics suggest that 2 of these dogs will have joint problems such as arthritis.

This handsome cat is a mercenary who is going to kill Shrek and, at the most inopportune time, he gets a hairball. He has to stop everything as the threat of the hairball takes front and center. If you have heard that familiar sound of your cat trying to bring up a hairball, you know there is no good time.
